Since the age of four I had planned on becoming a veterinarian. Apparently, as the story goes, I would practice “emergency surgery” on my stuffed animals. From this early age my family taught me a love and respect for animals. Through the years we had a variety of cats, dogs, birds and reptiles. I have never known a life without animals and, therefore, it seemed inevitable that I would end up a veterinarian.

I did my pre-veterinary undergraduate studies at Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois. From there I went to Champaign, Illinois where I graduated from the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine in 2003. Fresh from veterinary school I practiced at a small clinic in northwestern Illinois. The slow pace of my first job did not suit me so in June 2004 I found myself here at Care Animal Hospital. I am grateful to my co-workers, clients and patients for making this the ideal job.

I enjoy all aspects of veterinary medicine but my primary interests are dermatology and internal medicine. My interest in dermatology began back in grade school when our family dog was diagnosed with severe flea allergies. This was back in the day before adequate flea control and there was unfortunately no appropriate treatment. Bear and our family suffered because his condition was so severe that euthanasia was eventually our only option. I learned early to never underestimate the importance of skin disease in pets. Once in vet school I continued this interest and was awarded the Tanner Leong Memorial Award, a scholarship awarded to a senior veterinary student in recognition of excellence in dermatology.

My husband, Justin, and I have two wonderful little boys. Tommy, born in March 2005, is extremely energetic and too smart for his own good.  His main goal in life is to make us laugh.  Mikey, born in May 2007, is my sweet little boy (at least at this point).  He often has to fight the cats for a spot on Mommy's lap.  We are also the proud “parents” of 6 cats and 3 dogs.  Definitely not a feat for the weak at heart!  Each of my pets have either been rescues or adopted from various humane societies.  I have a spaniel mix named Molly, a terrier mix named Ethel and a rottweiler mix named Stump.  My 6 cats are Tony, Melvin, Miss Toes, Little Guy, Beau and Squeakers.  My favorite quote is “There’s a sucker born every minute-and the stray cats know where we all live!” Back when I had free time (before Tommy, Mikey and all the pets!) I enjoyed crossword puzzles, running, and biking. One day I’ll find time for my hobbies again but in the mean time I wouldn’t have it any other way.
